“Tonguidong BoanYeogwan(inn)”, located in the 1st street in Tongui-dong, has been always a”cultural space”. As the word ‘inn’ suggests, it has been a shelterfor people who have come and gone for over seven decades. But even before that, Tongin-dong, was one of the most importantcultural districtsfor artists ofold time Korea. The painter, ‘Kyumje Jeong seon’, who established ‘Jinkyung Sansu ,眞景山水 (true-view)’ style painting, used to spendtime in Tongin-dong area with his friends during the Joseon Dynasty. The scholar, calligrapher andpainter, Chusa Kim Jong Hui, who made famous work ‘Sehando ,歲寒圖, was born in Tongin-dong. During the Japanesecolonial era. Tongin-dong alley was described as ‘dead end alley’ in ‘Ogamdo 烏瞰圖’ by the poet Lee Sang. In addition, the poet Seo Jeong-ju published the literary magazine, ‘The Poets Quarter’, actually in Boan Inn with other poets. Not only Tongin-dong and Boan Inn been an inspirational for such artists and poat, but the location is important as it is surrounded by many historical site, such as Gyeongbok Palace, the Blue House, Gwanghwa Gate, Yeongchu Gate, Geumchun, Tongin Market and Inwang Mountain. Boan Inn is living history, car- ryingthe traces of all those who spent time there. In this sense, self-described ‘Accommodation of cul- ture’, Tongui-dong Boan Yeogwan(Inn) has settled as an ‘A base for culture production’ where produces life-based and site-specific arts since 2007.50
